Pottery

I confess that I’m bewildered by the endless amount of early pottery that surfaces on the market every spring in the south of France. By my count every 19th century Frenchman must have owned 17 confit pots.

That’s why I buy very selectively. In fact, I buy from only one source.

He lives in a 15th century chateau in a remote area of the Aveyron. The public rooms are redolent of dried fennel. Very pleasant, indeed. Sometimes he opens the place to visitors (third Tuesday of every month?) to see his little museum filled with southwestern urns, amphorae, cachepots, cassoulet pans, cruches, bean pots, orjols, and more.

Occasionally, he allows me to buy a piece or two.
