Centuries mingle unselfconsciously in France, Roman coliseums rubbing shoulders with Le Corbusier modern.

One result is a rich concentration of wonderful old things preserved in narrow French attics and and cool wine cellars and stone barns out in those fields where long, straight rows of trees stretch improbably to the horizon.

Sometimes the density gets a bit much much even for the French, and it’s off to the flea market. But personally, I prefer to cultivate relationships with the property owners themselves.

Many of them have become great friends, I’m pleased to say. I tend to get the phone calls first. And the prices tend to be better, too.
