Turgot’s 1739 Map of Paris

Are you looking for gifts worthy of the Francophiles on your list? Trying to spread that noble attitude? You’ll find nothing better than this wall-transforming reproduction of Turgot’s 1739 Map of Paris.

Turgot worked to embellish the city with architectural decorations, including the fountain on the rue de Grenelle. In 1734, he promoted the
image of Paris by preparing a new copper-engraved map of the city surveyed by Louis Bretez, a professor famous for his manual on perspectives.

It is widely considered the most beautiful and celebrated map of Paris prior to the 19th century, before the capital was completely transformed
under Napoleon III and Haussman.

Each arrondissement is shown from a birds-eye view. Every street is named and portrayed in detail, including all of the houses, hotels, churches, monuments, private gardens and city parks; shown here, complete map; for eye- and-mind filling closeups including of Notre Dame on Ile de la Cite in the Seine, click on images below.
